"Is my child a good fit for this camp?"
I tell parents that if they can answer YES to most of the following questions, then T.OT Camp may be a great fit for their child:
ASTEROIDS (Beginner Writers)
-
Is your child between the ages of 3.5 - 5.5 years old?
-
Has your child ever been in a structured program (e.g. daycare, preschool, transitional kindergarten, kindergarten, private school/Montessori, public school?)
-
Is your child struggling to use/manipulate items like scissors, pencils/crayons, glue?
-
Does your child have a hard time copying letters or drawings?
-
Is your child able to copy simple shapes like a vertical line, horizontal line, circle?
-
Does your child struggle with putting together multi-step activities like crafts, Legos, simple puzzles?
-
Does your child have learning to learn skills (e.g. sitting in a group, following directions, playing with friends?)
-
Is your child potty trained?

COMETS (Lower Elementary)
-

-

-
Is your child forming letters inefficiently (e.g. multiple segments, atypical directionality, inconsistent start points) ?
-
Does your child struggle with sentence pragmatics (e.g. spacing, sizing, letter placement, casing, and punctuation usage)?
-
Does your child have difficulty with reading comprehension? They may be able to read well, but have difficulty with recall or summarization.
-
Does your child struggle with writing sentences and/or a cohesive paragraph?
-
Does your child have learning to learn skills (e.g. sitting in a group, following directions, playing with friends?)

ECLIPSE (Upper Elementary)
-
Is your child between the ages of 8.5 - 12.5 years old?
-
All points listed under Comets, but the differences are:
-
The class is for older elementary students.
-
Though the topic is the same, the content of the reading material is more advanced.
-
The paragraph written on the topic of the day will be more elaborate with a heavier emphasis on transition words and flow.
-
ORION (Elementary)
-
Is your child between the ages of 6.5 - 12.5 years old?
-
Are they showing interest in cursive?
-
If they are older (past 9 years old), their writing motor pathways may be too heavily automated. Creating new motor pathways via cursive may help improve overall legibility with written communcation!
